Our scepticism is reinforced by the results of a comparison of the relationship between political trust and civic duty in 1987 (that is, in the post-election survey of that year) and again in 2005. If the decline in civic duty between those two dates was accounted for by the decline in political trust, then the level of civic duty among those who trust government always or most of the time should be much the same in both years. In fact, civic duty was 11 points higher among this group in 1987 than it was in 2005.
Then, as evidenced by the readings for 1998, there seems to have been a particularly marked change of mood once the public had begun to experience New Labour rule in practice. Thereafter, there seems to have been further signs of slippage in support for a left-wing outlook, most notably in 2004.
