These probes can be applied from the left and from the right and from the top and from the bottom so that totally 258 defects were to be detected per inspector. The detectability scale was here defined quantitatively in terms of 2dB steps from -6dB to +6dB. The adjustment of the ultrasonic device was done by an administrator before the experiments and then fixed. We had two groups of inspectors with different experience level: The first group with "no experience" carried out the experiments immediately after the course in ultrasonic testing.

We notice, in addition to a sensitivity difference, a discrepancy in the shape of signals relatively important between the two transducers. This discrepancy is the cause of the variations of the echoes levels on real defects, even with taking the usual precautions while calibrating upon standard defect. At the bottom are presented the results obtained upon the calibration target with excitation signals adapted respectively short and long. The short signals do not require any reception processing while long signals need a spectral phase demodulation.

13 the results for the detection ROC pooled for the two groups are shown. Interpreting the area under the ROC curve as probability in a two alternative test with a defective sample and a sample without defects to say correct which is which we see that this probability is 20% higher for the inspectors with experience. This difference is statistical significant up to a 95% confidence level (paired t-test). In figures 14 and 15 the detection ROC curves for the individual inspectors of each group are presented.
