More than a decade ago, Lucile Mc Donald was kind to me when I phoned to ask her help researching a local history topic. She made it plain that I was wasting my time in graduate school and should get an honest job. But she was clearly pleased that I was thoroughly familiar with her work. She invited me to her home and opened her files to me. I became one of her many acquaintances.
In my second high school year when I had grown bold enough, I dropped a story in the box where contributions for The Spectrum were collected. My effort was accepted. Shortly afterward when several relatives were visiting I broke the news that my writing Page 6 was about to be published. I thought they would congratulate me.
